what do you think of this?
i took the pic from my friend’s sara’s fb.
it seems that this campaign is going in Palestinian streets.
in lebanon, we are used to see people wearing the veil in a more modern look.
even a more fashionable look.
according to this campaign, wearing sexy outfits with a headcover is not enough, and it is changing the meaning of the veil.
the veil is not intended for the hair, but it is a social identity, were fluid and large clothes are needed.
what is your opinion about this matter?
Hi Rita,
The veil was intended to cover the “charms” of the ladies. Meaning the hair and the nice smell that might emanate from it. Wearing the veil with full make-up, sexy clothing or pants is against the “modesty” of the women as preached by the muslim clerics. That is why it is clearly understandable that this campaign is seeing the light. I would have expected it sooner.
Either the lady is convinced that she wants to be modestly dressed according to the Muslim law and that means she will wear the veil and the clothing that will not detail her body or she is not and I don’t think the the Lebanese society is as coercive as others… at least so far.

I came across this because of BeirutSpring.. and here’s my opinion. I’m a hijabi. I’m not much different than most girls .. I love clothing, make up etc.
I’m convinced by the hijab and all.. and I wear it always. But here’s the thing a) I live in Canada and even in Lebanon I wouldn’t want to change.. b) Hijab is meant to take attention away from a women.. so let’s say its me and another non-hijabi — if i’m just an average girl dressed in an average way– who the hell will notice me? and I don’t think anyone can dictate what is a proper way of wearing the hijab..
And modesty has different meanings…
Anyway, I’m against these types of ads that force women to dress in a certain way. Men dress anyway they like and no one says anything. If we want women to dress like that, we should come up with a dress code for men to abide by too.

Kudos for Mariam. Dressing codes exist in all societies and the freedom of one´s attire is limited by more circumstances than we think, but actually telling women what to wear is way too much.
The only good thing in such campaigns is that it underlines the fact that society thinks that it is ok for women to be bossed around all the time, but not for men.

I believe that the veil should be worn to hide all the woman’s beauties and not only her hair, so I’m against wearing the veil along with sexy outfits, and also the Quran orders the woman to wear fluid and large clothes. So who wants to take the choice of being religious, following the Quran, and wearing the veil should not choose on her own what to hide and what to show; she have to hide her body along with her hair as the Quran orders her.

I am observing the media these days and all what i see is a campagine against hijjab and islamic behaviours .. There are more important things going on around the world that media is not concentrating on .. For example the disaster in Pakistan. Hunger all over the world … and also to me the israeli occupation of Palestine since this is going on in Palestine, and many other things more important than the hijjab which seems to take most of the coverage in the media these days… pls ppl pay attention the bigger and more important problems around us and lets think together how we gonna solve them…

I am with you that we have to keep our hijab…but no one has the authority to determine the shape of the Hijab because Allah has not given it a fixed shape; and as for the statement ” not to describe and not to be transperant”: this statement is an opinion. This statement is a flexible statement which can contate and include various meanings accroding to the differences in time and place. The photo for the Hijab in this campain put restrictions on the Hijab. The shape of the Hijab is not necessarily to be loose on the whole body as this image for the Hijab will not be practical for the kinds of jobs done by women nowadays…. Asma’ is one of the famous Sahabiats known for her belt and is called ” the one who has two belts…. the belt used to be used by women…

I don’t think there is a strict obvious line between the “right” and “wrong” hijab. But if guys still keep checking you out, then you’re probably doing it wrong. Like many here have pointed out, hijab is about modesty. You can’t be both modest and sexy, that’s just ridiculous. The ad was pretty clear though about freedom. Wear what you like but it should not be tight or transparent. Quite simple really, and I don’t understand how one can argue with it.

Allow me to say something first:
الحجاب حجاب القلب والروح
i.e. u should veil your heart and soul …which is what the veil is asked for in the first place. Islam is not about the scarf, but the scarf only represents the modesty and behavior of the woman, that should resemble that of Nuns in a way!
The ad requires you to be veiled the right way only with an abaya .. I totally dont belive in this!
Getting dressed for hijab only implies you’re not wearing tight n transparent stuff .. which can be done with pants too!
Not the time difference btw the ancestors and our current lifestyles dont match how people lived back then … Its not only a matter of what you wear, but also a matter of blending in!
And above all, your behavior counts and makes more statements than your veil!

Thank you Mohab and Nada for your observations,
I do beleive that the behavior counts, a lot,
what we wear enters only in the domain of what “image” we want to have and share with others.
