The Middle East and North Africa Programme at the International Secretariat of Amnesty International is seeking to appoint a dynamic, team oriented person to the role of Iraq Researcher in the Gulf team.

“ABOUT THE JOB:
As a research-based campaigning organization, investigating and documenting human rights issues is fundamental to our advocacy and lobbying work. Our Gulf team requires a researcher to take the lead in initiating human rights research and action by providing regional and thematic expertise, excellent research skills and sound political judgement. A campaign oriented approach to your work is essential. You will be required to conduct and co-ordinate research activities, monitor, investigate and analyse political, legal and social developments and human rights conditions, give authoritative advice on these areas and prepare human rights action materials.

ABOUT YOU:

2- Gender sexuality and identity – PROGRAMME DIRECTOR (1371)

No one should have their rights violated because of their identity, or because they defend the human rights of others. That’s why we’re committed to ending human rights abuses on the basis of identity, and ending the prejudice and discrimination that fuel such abuses. It’s pioneering work – and it’ll be down to you to lead the way. 

About the role
In this highly influential role, you’ll shape and develop our strategies, policies, research and advocacy on gender, sexual orientation and other forms of identity-based discrimination – making us the recognised authority on human rights abuses grounded in such discrimination. Doing this successfully means working with people across Amnesty International (AI), strengthening our research methodologies and managing a team of dedicated staff as they advise us on how to how to research, advocate and campaign on equal rights. It will involve raising awareness, enabling staff to play their roles and generating external debate. As well as writing incisive analyses, reports and briefings, you’ll represent AI to the media and to policy makers. You’ll also manage a significant budget and develop a coherent and effective operational plan. More than that, you’ll keep up to date with emerging political, academic and human rights trends to better support those who are standing up to perpetrators of human rights violations throughout the world. Even more importantly, you will yourself be an important thought leader or entrepreneur in this area of work.

An experienced human rights leader, you’ll have an impressive record of researching for advocacy and carrying out intersectional analyses of discrimination in relation to human rights. 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign has announced its new theme for 2015.

The Campaign that will be held from November 25 to December 10 will focus on:

“From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World: Make Education Safe for All!”

Below is a clearer view of what is thought of under the theme of 2015:

Under this global theme, the 16 Days Campaign is asking you to join in advancing the right to education and challenging violence, discrimination, and inequity in education at the intersection of gender, race or ethnicity, religion, real or perceived sexual orientation, socio-economic status, and other social identifiers. You can start thinking about what spaces and access to education look like in your community, country, or region. In planning your participation, consider the ways in which militarism affects education, whether in peacetime, during conflict, in refugee and IDP camps, in indigenous territories, in schools and other education settings, or even on the streets. Consider how violence and increased militarism has affected the education of young people in countries that have recently experienced different types of armed conflict; how extremism through State and non-State policies and practices have affected the right to education, especially for girls; and how government expenditures on arms and other priorities of militarization set the tone in funding for safe and accessible education for all .”

In Lebanon Education is a huge domain in which clear action plans need to be implemented, the Problem is access and quality of education for several people living in Lebanon.

I am thinking of all those IDPs camp in which I was greeted by yound children that didn’t go to school, and stayed in the camps all day long.

Since its founding in 1991, the Center for Women’s Global Leadership has been the global coordinator of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign. For the past twenty-five years, the 16 Days Campaign has been dedicated to advocacy and coordination of work in support of ending gender-based violence at the local, national, and international levels. The dates, November 25th (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) and December 10th (Human Rights Day), were chosen to emphasize the links between ending gender-based violence and human rights principles and highlight that gender-based violence is an international human rights violation. The 16 Days Campaign is used as an organizing strategy to call for the elimination of all forms of gender-based violence by individuals, groups, and institutions throughout the world.

a movie by Zeina Daccache director of Catharsis, the NGO that works in Lebanon to offer therapeutic help through theater and art.

here is a brief about Catharsis:

Catharsis is the 1st non-profit organization in Lebanon to promote & offer therapeutic actions through the use of theatre & art processes for individuals and groups.  It offers services & programs in various social, educational & therapeutic settings such as substance abuse treatment centers, mental health facilities, hospitals, correctional facilities, private practice settings for children & adults, schools and corporations.  Catharsis also works with individuals who want to explore various life problems & expand their quality of life.  Catharsis produced the play & documentary 12 Angry Lebanese with male inmates of Roumieh Prison (2009-2010);  Scheherazade in Baabda the play interpreted by Baabda prison women inmates(2012); the play From the Bottom of my Brain with the residents at Al Fanar psychiatric hospital(2013); the documentary Scheherazade’s Diary with the Baabda inmates (2013).

Great work and I’m eager to watch it on the big Screen!!

How are online media changing the very foundations of news production and broadcasting in the Arab world?

What impact are they having on the public debate?

At a time when life in the Arab world is becoming more turbulent than ever, the 4M forum in Beirut from 17 to 19 October will analyse the role and place of online media in this complex and highly charged context: how are online media changing the very foundations of news production and broadcasting in the Arab world? What impact are they having on the public debate?

At the forum, more than 200 stakeholders from Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Syria and Tunisia will therefore have the opportunity to discuss the practices, new tools, ideas and innovations that they are implementing as part of their everyday activities and to describe the changes that are occurring in the region, in particular the increasing power of citizen journalists.

Participants’ discussions will focus on 3 main themes:

– New media or the redefinition of the media scene in society in the Arab world

– Innovation in terms of production of web based content and the new tools available to journalists

– Media enterprise and economy in the Arab world.

4M Beirut picks up the baton from CFI’s various ongoing projects supporting online media in the Arab world, such as EBTICAR and 4M Mashreq.

في خضمّ الغليان الذي يعيشه العالم العربي اليوم، يطرح منتدى “ 4M بيروت” (4M Beyrouth)، من 17 إلى 19 تشرين الأول/أكتوبر، التحديات الكبرى المرتبطة بدور وسائل الإعلام الإلكترونية ومكانتها في هذه البيئة المعقّدة والمتغيّرة. فكيف تُحدث وسائل الإعلام تغييراً جذرياً في طريقة إنتاج المعلومات في العالم العربي ونشرها؟ ما هو تأثيرها على النقاش العام؟

في هذا الإطار، يوفّر المنتدى فرصةً لأكثر من 200 صحافي وناشط وخبير من الأردن، تونس، الجزائر، سوريا، العراق، فلسطين، لبنان، مصر ليبيا، والمغرب، ليتبادلوا المعلومات والآراء حول الممارسات والوسائل الحديثة والأفكار والابتكارات المتعلقة بواقعهم اليومي، ويشهدوا على التحوّلات الراهنة، لا سيّما سطوع نجم صحافة المواطن.

ومن المقرّر أن يتبادل المشاركون الخبرات حول ثلاثة مواضيع أساسية هي: 

– وسائل الإعلام الجديدة أو إعادة تعريف المشهد الإعلامي ضمن المجتمعات العربية.

– الابتكار على صعيد إنتاج المحتوى الإلكتروني والأدوات الجديدة المتوفّرة للصحافيين.

– ريادة الأعمال واقتصاد وسائل الإعلام في العالم العربي.

يندرج منتدى “4M بيروت” ضمن إطار مشاريع مرافقة مختلفة متعلقة بوسائل الإعلام الإلكتروني في العالم العربي، تنفّذها في الوقت الراهنقناة فرنسا الدولية (CFI)، مثل مشروع “ابتكار- ميديا”، و” 4Mالانتقال الرقمي للصحف العربية””، أو أيضاً4M مشرق”.

J’ai entoure en rouge les confessions, mais ce decoupage electoral confessionnel est flagrant!!

Vous allez me dire, mais rita c’est normal nous vivons dans un pays confessionnel, ou la politique est histoire de confessions et de partage de pouvoir entre eux,

mais quand je suis entree sur le site du ministere de l’interieur pour checker qui sont les candidats et candidates,

la premiere chose qui saute a l’oeil est la confession:

l’image ci dessous est flagrante!!!

voila le lien pour connaitres les candidats aux elections legislatives libanaises de 2014….

en esperant que les elections aient lieu!!!!

514 candidats dont 35 femmes, bon tout ce que j’espere est que les elections aient lieu nous Avons OBLIGATOIREMENT besoin d’un “peu” d’Alternance.

un peu car beaucoup sont les femmes, fils et cousins et freres des actuels ministres, deputes ou ex-deputes!

Yesterday at a restaurant serving lebanese food I was shocked a small boy of 7 to 8 years old maybe was serving on the tables.

He was offering narguileh (the famous smoking pipe very well-known in Lebanon), and drinks to us. Is that safe??  Also, I remembered that during the video-shooting of the prank organised by Sakker el Dekkeneh, a small boy of 12 years old followed me on the street to take a free “brevet” and “baccalaureat”. He didn’t understand that it was a prank against corruption in Lebanon, all what he wanted is a school diploma. When I asked why aren’t you at school, he said I have to work!

In Lebanon with the millions of refugees flying from Syria we are witnessing the high numbers of those working children. They are everywhere at the hairdresser, on some construction sites (which is not safe at all for them), at the restaurants, and in the streets!

The problem is that those young boys and girls are deprived from any opportunity to have an education!!! they are obliged to leave school and attend to their families welfare at a very early age!!

I don’t know which associations, NGOs or International Organisations  (other than what I have read on ILO webpage ) are working on that subject in Lebanon, but the issue needs to be adressed as a priority!!!

Terms of Reference for a communication consultant for the PROWD project

(June – October 2014)

Background

Promoting Rights of Women Domestic Workers Programme (PROWD) aims to improve the situation of women migrant domestic workers (WMDWs) in Lebanon by ensuring favorable working conditions and a regulated environment that protects their rights. Specifically, this project constitutes the extension and consolidation of an initial phase that fits into a long-term intervention planned by the ILO at the regional level. This intervention will meet the priorities of regulation, monitoring of international labour migration and the protection of the rights of domestic workers. Activities vary among research, awareness raising, material production, technical meetings, and training. The pilot phase was led by the Ministry of Labour (MoL) in cooperation with ILO, other UN agencies, government institutions and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). During this preliminary phase, the basis for a larger action plan with specific institutional capacity building components was established. An institutional mapping exercise was carried out and gaps were identified, which informed the design and planning of the project activities.

In order to increase synergy in the production of material of the project, and the visibility of the activities which will have an impact on sensitizing the wider public on rights of WMDWs, a communication consultant is required to assist the project. Within the framework of the PROWD Project funded by EC, the consultant will be office based and work to support the project on specific communication deliverables listed in the Tasks section below.

Tasks

Specifically, the consultant will be tasked with:

– Develop, coordinate and support the implementation of the communications strategy for the extended period of the project.

– Monitor the dissemination of publications produced by the project, specifically the Workers Information guide, the board game, research reports and other publications.

– Coordinate the participatory newsletter of the Project, develop concept note, mainly to follow up on material and articles collection, coordinate translation and copy edit and design, as well as electronic dissemination.

– Compilation of press releases on issues relevant to Migrant domestic worker and news about the projects for the period of this contract.

– Contribute to the coordination and monitor visibility activities and events of the project mainly:

– Draft TORs for needed communication consultants like graphic designers and others.

– Draft Media advisory and Press release relevant to project events

– Invite and mobilize the media to cover project’s events

– Follow up on design work and printing of the following deliverables:

o SORAL code of conduct

o Migrant Domestic Workers recruitment guide

o Policy Briefs produced by the project

o Project leaflet/info graphic

o Sexual and Reproductive Health guide developed by UNFPA

o Teacher’s guide

Other tasks:

– Suggest initiatives to promote the projects’ results with national stakeholders and in national media and within the ILO in collaboration with the communication personnel at ILO/ROA.

– Contribute to the development of concepts and content of various communications products publications and other promotional or information materials.

– Support in editing communication material in Arabic and English;

– Translation of communication material into Arabic/English

– Ensure that all visibility material is in compliance with ILO and EU regulations.

– Coordinate with Communication units at ILO and EU on relevant communication issues, mainly press release and clearance on visibility and use of logos.

– Other related responsibilities as required by the NPC.

Working Relations

The consultant will be office based and work under the direct supervision of the National Project Coordinator, and will coordinate interventions with relevant staff members from the project and the communication team at the ILO/ROAs.

Timeline, Deliverables, and remuneration

The consultancy is expected to take place during the months of 27 June to 31 October 2014 for the lump sum of 16,500 USD.

Qualifications

The communication consultant is expected to have the following qualifications:

 Advanced university degree in Journalism/Mass Communications or related fields.

 At least 3-5 years of experience in working in the communication field with development organizations

 Practical experience in communications strategies and projects;

 In-depth knowledge and understanding of development issues and relevant work experience.

 Ability to analyze, plan, communicate effectively orally and in writing

 Knowledge and understanding of EU and ILO guidelines is an advantage

 Fluency in Arabic and English, orally and in writing.

 Computer literacy and ability to effectively use office technology equipment, IT tools.

Excellent interpersonal skills, solid judgment/ decision making, initiative and creativity.

 Team player.

 Ability to work under pressure and meeting deadlines
