Dears, developments in women’s rights in Lebanon are moving this week….
Today the Lebanese Parliamentary commission ( children and women) headed by Gilberte Zwein, is discussing the Nationality law;
I hope that they take into account demands of the civil society and the Conventions Lebanon has ratified as the CEDAW and the International Treaties( Economic and political rights Convention) and the Lebanese Constitution….as I always repeat: the transmission of citizenship is a fundamental right, stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. This should take precedence over political considerations. The balance of demographical power shouldnt counter the rights of Lebanese women.
What We aim for is Equality: Lebanese Men and Women should transmit their nationality to their children and husbands!
By amending the nationality law of 1925 ( yes old, very old but not mature) and giving Lebanese women this right, the Lebanese state would grant them the full extent of their rights as citizens and bring about greater gender equality in Lebanon.
and dear MPs note that the civil society is watching you…..
